Iron Wig 2016 – Round 5: Final Round
Hello contestants and spectators, and welcome to the Final Round of Iron Wig 2016!
Our contestants received the following:
-Ororo in Pure White
-Leia in Spanish Brown
-Jareth XL in Fire Orange
-Long wefts in Wine
-Jumbo Braid in Light Orange
-Jumbo Braid in Blazing Orange
Contestants: You will be creating three wigs over the course of six weeks! You are not required to use all the materials in your box, but certain items are specific to certain challenges:
-FINE ARTS DYE CHALLENGE
With your white Ororo, we want you to dye and style a wig inspired from a Master Artist! Some examples of Master Artists include Leonaro Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh, or Katsushika Hokusai. You can confirm your artist inspiration with us, or we can provide you with a larger list of examples. You cannot use any additional fibers besides the white wig, but you can use other materials such as foam core or accessories.
-JUMBO BRAID TUTORIAL CHALLENGE
With your Orange Jareth Long and jumbo braids, Create a style that incorporates at least one of the jumbo braids, and make a tutorial about how you used them! The tutorial can be presented in a video or through photos with step-by-step instructions. Warning: Jumbo Braids are not heat-resistant like the Jareth Long. You cannot use additional hair besides the wig and jumbo braids, but you are allowed to dye and use non-fiber materials and accessories.
-FREESTYLE
Style your Spanish Brown Leia however you’d like! The Wine long wefts are available as a secondary color. No additional fibers or dyeing are allowed, but you can use supplemental materials such as foam core and accessories.
Progress photos are not required, though they do help! Take photos of several angles of the finished wig. You may have assistance with the photography, makeup, modeling, etc (just not the styling).
These are the categories we’ll be judging you on for a total of 50 points possible:
-Overall Presentation (10 points)
-Overall Cleanliness (10 points)
-Master Artist Dye Challenge (10 points)
-Jumbo Braid Tutorial (10 points)
-Freestyle wig (10 points)
Here’s a rundown on how each category works:
OVERALL PRESENTATION (20% of your final score)
The Presentation is how the wigs are showcased. Photos of several angles of the wigs are required, and progress photos are recommended. Meeting requirements does not always mean automatically getting all points though. In the past a lot of contestants used a portion of their time towards presentation by displaying their wigs on a real person or themselves rather than just a wig head, and sometimes even went to a special location and dressed their model to match. You don’t have to have a professional photographer or supermodel to do this; as long as you make an effort to show your wigs off on a real person and get photos under good lighting or in front of a non-distracting background, you will do well in this category.
OVERALL CLEANLINESS (20% of your final score)
Cleanliness is literally how clean your wig looks. Some things we look carefully for when scoring this category:
Do spikes have tips that are cut bluntly, or do they come to a nice point? Are there gaps showing? Is the hair smooth or bumpy over different areas? How’s the overall shape of a spike or hair form? Is the cut choppy or uneven? Can we see glue, flyaways, or frizz? Etc.
Points will be deducted based on how many things we nitpicked and the extensiveness of those things (is there just frizz in a tiny area or is it in several places?). It’s possible for no contestant to get a perfect score on this category.
MASTER ARTIST DYE CHALLENGE (20% of your final score)
We’ll be looking at how effective the dye method is, and how well the color and style represents the artist chosen by the contestant. We’ll also be taking into account the complexity of the dye work and styling for this score.
JUMBO BRAID TUTORIAL (20% of your final score)
We’ll be looking at the clarity and usefulness of the tutorial for the main portion of this score. Creativity and complexity will also be taken into consideration.
FREESTYLE WIG (20% of your final score)
We’ll be scoring this wig based on creativity and complexity of the style.
Scores will be done by 3 Arda judges; scores will be added up and divided by 3 to give each contestant an average score for each category. Contestants can obtain a private critique if requested.
The three prizes are as follows:
1st place: $100 gift certificate to Arda Wigs, and $500 worth wig styling tools and supplies
2nd place: $75 gift certificate to Arda Wigs, and $100 worth wig styling tools and supplies
3rd place: $75 gift certificate to Arda Wigs
There will be an audience favorite poll once the results are in; the top favorite will receive a $25 gift certificate to our website!
Late entry policy: Entries submitted within 12 hours after the deadline can be accepted as a late entry. Late entries will not be qualified to enter the audience poll, and will receive a 25% point deduction from their total score. This will likely result in the lowest score, but the contestant can still receive their $75 certificate for third place. Entries submitted past the 12-hour late entry period will be disqualified, and will not receive any prizes.
Your deadline will be: July 26th at Noon (Central US time)
Have fun, and best of luck! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!
